EBWA October Program: Genetic Genealogy for Law Enforcement (and You!)
October 27, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Speaker: Tobi Kirschmann, Founder and Owner of DNA Investigations
As the owner of DNA Investigations in Saratoga Springs, Tobi Kirschmann uses DNA to help law enforcement and citizen sleuths. Prior to founding her business, she served for ten years as a criminologist for the California Dept. of Justice. She says that “Working in forensic science and DNA analysis during that time opened my eyes to the possibilities that had recently evolved, using genetic genealogy to solve high profile long-term cold cases – most prominently the Golden State Killer and the East Area Rapist.” After moving East, she took took a genetic genealogy course at Boston University, then worked for a year and a half at the Forensic Investigation Center in Albany. She has since made important contributions to law enforcement to help solve cases with genetic genealogy. She also offers adoption research, background checks and genealogy reports for civilians. Some have said that every law enforcement agency needs a genetic genealogist on staff moving into the future. After hearing this talk, you can judge for yourself! — All who identify as women are welcome to attend this and all other EBWA programs.
While we hope to resume in-person meetings at some point, we will continue on Zoom through February. To receive an invitation to join the Zoom program, please email Gabrielle Reals at ellegr3@gmail.com by Monday, October 24. If you have never used Zoom before, this tutorial will tell you how to do it: Zoom Tutorial from TCUUC. After you download a free Zoom account, if you need help, contact Judy Clough at mimaclough@yahoo.com. Best to do this well before the meeting. Please note: If you have already requested that Judy send you a Zoom invite, you do not need to contact Gabrielle for the upcoming program.
Sign into the meeting between 6:50 and 7:00 pm. After welcoming remarks, the speaker will be introduced. Following the presentation, there will be time for questions. Networking (when each woman may share something of interest with the group) will begin around 8:15, and the meeting will end no later than 9 pm. There is no charge for EBWA programs offered on Zoom, but in order for us to be able to pay our speakers an honorarium, we need your help. Please consider subscribing by sending a $30 check made out to EBWA to Carol Furman (contact her at cfurm13@gmail.com to learn where to send your check).
