RE This Week – Nov 30th

CHILD DEDICATION!  This Sunday’s service will include a child dedication for one of our newest little UU’s.  We invite you and your family to attend the service and be a part of this special UU ritual, as we share a blessing for this precious new life, an expression of the parents’ hopes for him, and a promise by the congregation to support and nurture him.
HOLIDAY STORY TIME:  You and your children are invited to join me for Holiday Story Time on Tuesday, 12/4, from 6-6:30 pm.  Let me know if you have any special story requests. Contact me for the link.
UPCOMING RE CLASSES:
K-6 EXPERIENCES WITH THE WEB OF LIFE:  These nature lovers will meet again online this Sunday, 12/5, from 9:30-10:15***.
***Parents, Please have your child complete the following “assignment” before we meet this Sunday so they can most fully engage in class and share their observations.
  • Find insects in your special place or nearby: Look: on plants, in the air; dig, turn over rocks.
  • For each item found, write or draw in your journal: Name (if you know it), drawing, and/or description.
  • If you don’t find any, look in books, magazines, and newspapers. Add a few found items to your journal.
7/8 THE FIFTH DIMENSION:  Their next meeting is Sunday morning, 12/5, from 9:15-10:15.  Come, join The Fifth Dimension for some Twilight Zone fun and meet new Co-teacher Sharon MacNeil, who will be joining Co-teacher Courtney Barber!  Former Co-teacher Alexandria Onderdonk-Milne needed to step down, and Sharon has been kind enough to step up.  A big THANK YOU to Alexandria for sharing so much of her time and energy with our UUSS Children—we will miss being with you in class!
8/9 OWL:  This group’s next meeting is Sunday evening, 12/5, from 7-9.
SENIOR YOUTH (grades 9-12):  Our next regular meeting is Sunday, 12/5, at noon. Senior Youth In-person Movie Night Coming Soon!  Keep an eye out for the date!
INTERESTED IN MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF UUSS KIDS?  The RE Team is looking for a couple new members.  We meet monthly to help support the Children and Youth of UUSS, as well as the DLRE.
ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY:
Transcendentalism:  Then and Now
Please join us for a four-part Adult Faith Development class titled: Transcendentalism Then and Now, led by Rev. John Buehrens. Hosted virtually at First Unitarian Rochester and sponsored by the St. Lawrence Chapter of the UU Minister’s Association.
Background reading (optional) for the course is Rev. Buehrens’ recent book, CONFLAGRATION: How the Transcendentalists Sparked the American Struggle for Racial, Gender, and Social Justice (Boston: Beacon Press, Jan. 2020).  The book is available from Beacon Press or the UUA bookstore.
The course, however, will be thematic rather than following the narrative of the book.  Rev. Buehrens will identify contemporary issues as well as explore the pioneering efforts of our spiritual forebears in spiritual practice, women’s rights, anti-racism, and ecotheology.  The format of the course will include both lecture and discussion.
During his career, Rev. Buehrens served congregations in TN, TX, NY, MA, and CA.  Prior to his retirement in 2017, he was the Senior Minister of the UU Society of San Francisco.  He was also the president of the UUA from 1993 to 2001.
Date:  Sundays:  January 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2022
Time: 7-8:30 pm
Presenter: Rev. John Buehrens
Location: via Zoom.  (link to follow)
The four sessions will cover the following topics:
  • Jan 9: The Transcendentalists: Shared Values, Conversations, and Spiritual Friendships
  • Jan 16: Women’s Rights, Education and Economic Inequality
  • Jan 23: Abolitionism and the Civil War: The Peak of Transcendentalist Influence
