Carbon Offsets Air Travel by Nancy Peterson
Having increased our carbon footprint with a couple of major airline trips this summer (one to Colorado and one to Sweden), we decided it was time to look into carbon offsets for our environmental transgressions. We thought this might be helpful information for others returning from similar summer activities.

I started by looking at websites where you can calculate your carbon footprint. A number of these are available and you’re welcome to check them out. The one that worked best for me was www.calculator.carbonfootprint.com/calculator. You can do a complete picture of your entire life history, but I was interested in this summer’s flights, so I clicked on that tab at the top. Typing in the names of the airports, it calculated the mileage. I added together the totals for 2 people from the two trips and found our debt was 9 metric tons of CO2.

My next step is to select vetted CO2 mitigating projects available to donate to. The easiest way is to click on the 0FFSET NOW button on the same web page. I’ve looked at various options being offered on a number of similar websites. They include projects around the world like tree planting, wind turbine and solar projects, improved cook stoves, etc. They’re interesting to read about, so take a look for yourself.
