While we each have our own individual lives and we make the choices we make, no one is an island unto themselves. We are interdependent. We rely on one another more than we often realize. Some folks remind us that Life is a team sport. We have families, friend circles, villages, towns, teams, and other ways we get through.
In Unitarian Universalism, we value pluralism, which, as articulated in the new UUA covenant, means we celebrate that we are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and the(*)logy. And we covenant to learn from one another in our free and responsible search for truth and meaning. We embrace our differences and commonalities with Love, curiosity, and respect. We are many AND we are one.
We will be tested again and again in the coming days and weeks. While we may not agree on every little thing, we can still be unified against evil and that which seeks to dehumanize and divide. We have a hymn that reminds us ‘We will be one as now we join in singing our hymn of love, to pledge ourselves anew to that high cause of greater understanding of who we are, and what in us is true. We would be one in living for each other to show to all a new community.’ (318 by Samuel Anthony Wright sung to the tune by Jean Sibelius known as Finlandia.)
