More Than a Century: The Challenges to Achieve An Equal Rights Amendment (EBWA Program)

March 28 @ 6:45 pm - 9:00 pm

March 28, 6:45-9:00 pm, in the church dining room

Speaker: Andrea Foroughi, Associate Professor and Chair, History Dept., Union College

Please note: We will return to in-person meetings on March 28! Professor Andrea Foroughi will speak about the long struggle to secure equal rights for women in the U.S., starting with the push for women’s rights in 1848 to the proposed 1923 amendment through today’s efforts to claim a victory for the ERA’s passage. She will detail the arguments for and against women’s equal rights over time and how they have changed. She will also provide information about New York State’s Equal Rights Amendment, which will be on the ballot in November 2024. As an associate professor and chair of Union’s History Department, Andrea has taught US women’s history, including a course specifically on the history of women’s rights in the US.— All who identify as women are warmly invited to join us for this informative program.

We will serve coffee, tea, and dessert before the program. We urge you to arrive by 6:45 pm (or 6:30, if you’d like to have more time to socialize). Use the back door to the church, off the parking lot. We want everyone to have time to greet each other and settle in before Andrea’s talk begins shortly after 7 pm. Following the presentation, there will be time for questions. Networking (when each person may share something of interest with the group) will begin around 8:15, and the meeting will end no later than 9 pm.

While reservations are not required, in order to have some idea of how many people to expect, it would be helpful if you would email Gabrielle Reals at ellegr3@gmail.com by Tuesday, March 26, to let her know you are coming. (If you forget to do this, we urge you to come anyway!) As a reminder, in order for us to be able to pay our speakers an honorarium, we need your help. Please consider subscribing by bringing a $30 check made out to EBWA to the upcoming meeting (or contacting Carol Furman at cfurm13@gmail.com to learn where to send your check). Those who have subscribed may attend the in-person meetings for free. All others will be asked to contribute $5 toward our costs, at the door.

Looking ahead: Our April 25th program will feature Kathy Fernandez, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity, Schenectady. She will speak about “Advancing Social Justice One House at a Time.” To see the full calendar of EBWA programs for 2023-2024, click here.
