Downstream Justice Project Update

The Social Justice Action Team (SJAT) and Green Sanctuary Team are working together to stop raw sewage from polluting the Hans Groot Kill, the creek that runs along beside our building, and downstream into the Mohawk River. Our strategy is to employ the Six Circles of Social Justice to support City and community efforts to clean up the creek. The six circles are education, direct service, advocacy, witness, community organizing and leadership development.

Beginning with the Education Circle, as we wait for the test results on the Hans Groot Kill from the City and from John Garver’s research group, the Social Justice Action Team (SJAT) and Green Sanctuary Team will continue to update information via Circuits and the table at the back of the Great Hall. An informational flyer will be at the table very soon and links to further studies will be on our webpage hopefully before the end of the year.

Plans are in the works to bring Dr. Garver and his students from Union College to present the full situation at hand at UU Schenectady after the holidays. The event will be open to the congregation, the City Council, the GE Plot Neighborhood Association and other community stakeholders. More on that coming!
