December Theme: Unexpected Gifts

Generosity is one of our UU values. The Article II Study Commission notes, “We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope. We covenant to freely and compassionately share our faith, presence, and resources. Our generosity connects us to one another in relationships of interdependence and mutuality.”

When we practice generosity, what unexpected gifts might we help emerge? inspire? manifest? Alan Saunders once wrote and John Lennon adapted the phrase in his song Beautiful Boy: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” How do we share our faith without the negative implications of proselytization? How does the gift of presence intersect with the practice of making plans?

With the hyper-commercialism of the season, what resources do we really need and what might we make space for in this time of waiting (Advent), wisdom (Bodhi Day), miracles (Hanukkah), journeys (Las Posadas), sacred darkness (Solstice) and holy births foretold (Christmas)?
