Co-Ministers’ Colloquy – February 11th

Power is a tricky word for some folks. In one sense-Everyone has power. Through the constructs of society, some can access more power or less. Some can impact change because they have more power or those with less power can join together with enough power to make a change. In another sense-we all have exactly the same amount of power and that it is our own perceptions that limit it. Both can be strangely true at the same time.

This paragraph could cause us to argue for days or even millennia. Humans have had dubious relationships and understandings of power for as long as we’ve been alive. We can’t even agree on what power actually is, or isn’t. Some of us have had others use their power against us and to harm us. Some of us have used our power against others and to harm others. Wars have been fought. Nations have been destroyed. Great loves have ended because we haven’t gotten clear on what it means to have power and how to use it for good. It is important as religious people to grapple with power, our own and the ways we have/don’t have, use/don’t use it. Humility and curiosity are excellent tools in doing this work. Let’s continue to be more explicit about the power that exists in us, in our society, in our government, in our belief systems, etc. This is the Electric City after all- we ought to be willing to talk about power. 😉
