On Dec. 26, Gov. Hochul signed the Climate Change Superfund Act! Hurray! This landmark law will require large fossil fuel companies to pay $3 billion a year for 25 years to mitigate the effects of climate change in New York State, with at least 35% of those benefits going to disadvantaged communities.
This law, which is the second such law in the nation and will serve as an example for other states, would not have been passed without the efforts of many grassroots advocates — including many UU Schenectady community members!
Thank you to all who made a phone call to Gov. Hochul during the Climate Justice Revival in September, wrote postcards and letters to Gov. Hochul in December, or attended a rally or lobby day in Albany. The Green Sanctuary Team is so grateful for your voices as we seek to create justice together.
