Evening Branch of the Women’s Alliance (EBWA) December Program

December 15, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

“Move It and Use It: The Role of Physical and Mental Exercise on Brain Health”—December 15, 7-9pm

Speaker: Cay Anderson-Hanley, Professor of Psychology and Director of Neuropsychology at Union College

Join us on December 15 on Zoom for a fascinating talk.  As part of her work at Union College, Professor Cay Anderson-Hanley leads a clinical trial investigating the benefit of combined physical and mental exercise on brain function in hopes of describing an effective and practical way to promote healthy aging.  This work has led to a start-up at Union College of an exercise device which combines a stationary cycling device with a virtual bike path on video screen and a list of errands to accomplish.  This system is called iPACES, Interactive Physical and Cognitive Exercise System.  Results have been encouraging and should lead us all to think of ways to incorporate integrated exercise in our lives.  Check out the website www.myipaces.org ahead of the talk, as they are still enrolling participants and providing equipment. — All who identify as women are welcome to join us on Zoom to hear this interesting presentation.

While we hope to resume in-person meetings at some point, we will continue on Zoom at least through February.  To receive an invitation to join the program on Zoom, please email Gabrielle Reals at ellegr3@gmail.com by Monday, December 12. If you have never used Zoom before, this tutorial will tell you how to do it:  Zoom Tutorial from TCUUC.  After you download a free Zoom account, if you need help, contact Judy Clough at mimaclough@yahoo.com.  Best to do this well before the December 15 meeting.  Please note:  If you have already requested that Judy send you a Zoom invite, you do not need to contact Gabrielle for the upcoming program.

Sign into the meeting between 6:50 and 7:00pm.  After welcoming remarks, the speaker will be introduced. Following the presentation, there will be time for questions.  Networking (when each woman may share something of interest with the group) will begin around 8:15, and the meeting will end no later than 9pm.  There is no charge for EBWA programs offered on Zoom, but in order for us to be able to pay our speakers an honorarium, we need your help.  Please consider subscribing by sending a $30 check made out to EBWA to Carol Furman (contact her at cfurm13@gmail.com to learn where to send your check).

Make a Gift in Memory of EBWA Founding Mother, Betty Dietz

For many years (until the Covid pandemic of 2020-2021) each December EBWA coordinated the donation of panties to women at the Schenectady YWCA’s domestic violence shelter.  This year, after learning of the passing of Betty Dietz on October 6, 2022, the Steering Committee decided to suggest that people honor Betty by making donations to Planned Parenthood of Greater New York.  Betty was an inspiration to many women in the Schenectady and Albany UU churches, and she was deeply involved in several humanitarian organizations, including serving as Administrative Director of Planned Parenthood, Schenectady, in the 1980s and ‘90s.  To see Betty’s obituary, go here:  Betty Dietz Obituary (2022) – Schenectady, NY – Albany Times Union (legacy.com).  To make a donation online, go here: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-greater-new-york or send a check to Planned Parenthood of Greater NY, 540 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, NY 11550.
