Religious Education this Week – September 1st

RE Kick-off! All Children, Youth and Teachers are invited to participate in the October 4th Talent/No Talent RE Kick-off! The Kick-off will begin at 1 pm. Please contact DLRE Robin Ahearn if you’d like to perform: dlre@uuschenectady.org or (607) 435-2803 (call or text). Performances may include singing, dancing, instrumentals, poetry, artwork, photography, comedy, skits, story telling, etc. All skill levels are welcome! Depending on the number of participants, each performance will run 2-3 minutes. This is an opportunity for our Children and Youth to have some fun together. With individual virtual classes, we don’t get to see each other crossing the street, sharing a high five, or passing each other in the Waters House entryway. Please ask your kids if they’d like to participate.
2020-2021 RE: Now that school districts have announced plans for back to school, there’s a little less uncertainty. And still a lot to process. September is here and will likely present some new challenges for our families with Children and Youth. We’ve decided it’s best to provide families with Children and Youth an opportunity to settle in to whatever their back to school looks like this year by delaying the start of RE until October. Online registration will begin soon. If you have any questions or need support, please reach out and call, text, or email.
A date will be announced soon for Senior Youth, grades 9-12, to begin meeting.
While we originally planned for this to be an OWL year (Our Whole Lives sexuality education), plans have unfortunately changed due to COVID-19. OWL must be taught in person and all classes are expected to remain virtual through at least 5/2021. Virtual classes don’t allow for the observation of body language, full privacy and discretion, or the ability for facilitators to pick up on other cues that someone may be triggered or in need of help. Our hope now is to offer OWL next year. As parents are always the primary sexuality education resources for their children, know that there are OWL books available for loan or for purchase if you’d like to work with your Child or Youth at home. We appreciate your patience during this extraordinary time.
Remember to get some fresh air, wash your hands, wear your mask, and please stay healthy and safe!
