SUMMARY:Meet the Moment Potluck Lunch & Program
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Moment is a framework created by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) for collective conversation\, discernment\, and strategizing about how our faith can be its most impactful in the context of new realities for Unitarian Universalism\, religious life in North America\, and the geopolitical landscape. \nWe will nourish our bodies with a potluck lunch. And\, we will nourish our relationships with deep conversations guided by three questions intended for us to learn more about ourselves and one another\, deepen our Unitarian Universalist identity\, and strategize about what collective gifts and resources we have and how we might employ them effectively and meaningfully in alignment with our faith and our UUSS mission. We hope to see you there! – Rev. Lynn and Rev. Wendy

SUMMARY:BIPOC Authors Book Group Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Monday\, Dec. 29th from 6 – 7 for a discussion of this month’s book by a BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, or other Person of Color) author. \nDuring the last month of the year\, we read poetry – to reflect\, as one year ends and another one begins\, in stanzas that we have not created ourselves. Our choice for this December – Words Under the Words: Selected Poems by Naomi Shihab Nye\, (Palestinian American) 1994 \nFrom Nye’s poem\, “The Shopper” \nWe must bless ourselves with peaches.\nPray to the eggplant\, silent among her sisters\,\nthat the seeds will not be bitter on the tongue.\nConfess our fears to the flesh of the tomato:\nwe too go forward only halfway ripened\ndreaming of the deeper red. \nIf you have suggestions for novels\, historical fiction\, memoirs\, or books of poetry by BIPOC authors\, please send them along to info at uuschenectady dot org. You may write here for the Zoom info too.

SUMMARY:Help Stuff Stockings on Dec. 4th
DESCRIPTION:Last December\, UUSS members and friends packed 93 Holiday Stockings for children in Schenectady. This December\, the need is so much greater. We can’t fix grocery prices or the national SNAP mess\, but we UU’s can help make Christmas and Hanukkah a little happier for local families in need. Can we collect enough small toys\, toiletries\, kids hats and mittens to fill at least 125 stockings this year??? Filling 125 stockings means collecting at least 625 items! \nThe Daytime Alliance and EBWA are co-sponsoring this 5th annual Holiday Stocking Stuffer event. The process is easy. We provide the stockings; you provide the fillers. \nOn the next two Sundays (November 23\, and 30)\, please bring small items for children ages 3 – 12 to church and drop your donated items into the boxes at the back of the Great Hall. The Sycamore Collaborative Emergency Food Pantry has especially asked us to provide toothpaste\, toothbrushes\, children’s winter hats & mittens. Small stuffed animals\, toys\, books\, stickers & art/craft supplies are needed too. \nAlso\, all are welcome to join in the fun of filling the stockings at UUSS on Thursday\, Dec. 4. Starting at 11 AM\, we will stuff the stockings\, then enjoy a catered lunch together at 12 noon\, and at 1 pm\, hear about local food needs with a presentation by Sarah McGaughnen from the Regional Food Bank. \nLunch on December 4 will be $20\, payable with cash or check at the door. To RSVP for lunch\, please contact Nancy Bogdanowicz.

SUMMARY:EBWA Program for November: Communication for Connection
DESCRIPTION:“Communication for Connection”—November 20\, 6:30-9pm\, in the church dining room\nSpeaker: Wendy Miller\, Mediator and conflict coach \nLong-time EBWA member Wendy Miller will speak to us about Non-Violent Communication\, the brainchild of Marshall B. Rosenberg. According to Wendy\, “Rosenberg was curious about what fuels conflict and how it might be addressed differently.  The approach he developed is quite simple in format and yet has been shown to be incredibly effective in resolving the most complicated conflicts interpersonally and in war-torn countries.  It requires observation without judgment\, an understanding of our own feelings and needs\, and an intention to be authentic and compassionate.” — All who identify as women are invited to come to EBWA (the Evening Branch of the Women’s Alliance) to learn how to speak so that you are heard and how to listen so that others may have that same experience. \nWe will serve coffee\, tea\, and dessert before the program.  We urge you to arrive by 6:30 pm for time to socialize before the program begins at 7 pm. Following the presentation\, there will be time for questions. Networking (when each person may share something of interest with the group) will begin around 8:15\, and the meeting will end no later than 9 pm. \nWhile reservations are not required\, in order to have some idea of how many people to expect\, it would be helpful if you would email Gabrielle Reals at ellegr3@gmail.com  by Tuesday\, November 18\, to let her know you are coming.  (If you forget to do this\, we urge you to come anyway!)  As a reminder\, in order for us to be able to pay our speakers an honorarium\, we need your help.  Please consider subscribing by bringing a $30 check made out to EBWA to the upcoming meeting (or contact Carol Furman at cfurm13@gmail.com to learn where to send\nyour check).  Those who have subscribed may attend the in-person meetings for free.  All others will be asked to contribute $5 toward our costs\, at the door. \nTo see the full calendar of EBWA programs for 2025-2026\, click here. (Note that the January & February EBWA Programs will be online only.) \nLooking ahead: On December 4th we will join with the Daytime Alliance\, 11:45-2:00 pm for their Holiday Stocking Stuffer event and luncheon\, with a speaker from the Regional Food Bank. Bring small items for children ages 3-12\, such as toothpaste\, toothbrushes\, children’s winter hats and mittens\, small stuffed animals\, toys books\, stickers\, and art/craft supplies to the Nov. 20 EBWA meeting\, or drop them off at the church after checking in with Lillian at info@uuschenectady.org to be sure she will be there to open the door.

SUMMARY:EBWA's October Program: Vampires! An exploration with Professor Kristin Bidoshi
DESCRIPTION:“Vampires”—October 30\, 6:30-9pm\, in the church dining room \nSpeaker: Kristin Bidoshi\, Professor of Russian\, Director of Russian and East European Studies\nat Union College. \nProfessor Bidoshi has long been interested in how the vampire is a reflection of cultural fears and desires—from nineteenth century East European tales to postwar American science fiction and beyond.” At our upcoming meeting\, she will trace how the image of the vampire has transformed from a terrifying Eastern European peasant belief to a polished American icon—revealing not just its story\, but also the changing fears that shape our society. — All who identify as women are invited to come to EBWA (the Evening Branch of the Women’s Alliance) to hear about this fascinating subject. \nWhile reservations are not required\, in order to have some idea of how many people to expect\, it would be helpful if you would email Gabrielle Reals at ellegr3@gmail.com  by Tuesday\, October 28\, to let her know you are coming.  (If you forget to do this\, we urge you to come anyway!) \nAs a reminder\, in order for us to be able to pay our speakers an honorarium\, we need your help.  Please consider subscribing by bringing a $30 check made out to EBWA to the upcoming meeting (or contact Carol Furman at cfurm13@gmail.com to learn where to send your check).  Those who have subscribed may attend the in-person meetings for free.  All others will be asked to contribute $5 toward our costs\, at the door. \nTo see the full calendar of EBWA programs for 2025-2026\, click HERE. \nLooking ahead: Our November 20 th program will feature Wendy Miller\, mediator and conflict\ncoach\, speaking about “Communication for Connection.”

SUMMARY:Ingathering Water Communion: Get on Board! Then stay for the All Congregation Picnic!
DESCRIPTION:Join UUSS for the annual Unitarian Universalist Ingathering/Water Communion worship service. \nAfter the service\, all are welcome to stay for a potluck picnic. We’ll have tables in the dining room and on the patio\, and lawn games as weather permits. \nDetails:  \nWe’re going to have our annual Ingathering on the second Sunday of September\, Sept 14th. We will celebrate our community and the beginning of a new church year together\, including a Water Communion. \nEveryone is invited to bring a small bit of water from someplace that symbolizes your summer-perhaps a local pond\, a swimming pool\, the ocean\, your own faucet or hose. We will co-mingle the precious water that we collect\, honor the water for its nourishment\, and then purify and prepare the gathered waters to be used in other rituals throughout the year. \nAfter this multigenerational service celebrating Unitarian Universalism and our religious community\, we’ll have a shared meal. Bring a potluck dish to serve 8-12 people and a card with the ingredients as we have several folks with food allergies\, needs\, as well as preferences. We look forward to seeing you and to meeting some of you who have started attending this summer! -Rev. Lynn and Rev. Wendy

SUMMARY:Daytime Alliance September Luncheon features Dr. Nose-a-Lot!
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nose-a-Lot coming to UUSS on Thursday\, Sept. 11 \nAll are invited to RSVP now & join the Daytime Alliance for their first fall luncheon meeting and presentation at 12 noon on Thursday\, September 11\, in the church dining room with a unique guest speaker — Dr. Nose-a-Lot from Clowns on Rounds. \nYou’ve heard of music therapy? The presentation will begin at 1 pm. People of all genders are invited and urged to RSVP by September 2 by contacting Nancy Bogdanowicz.
