DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for our Mayfest CommUUnity Celebration on May 2\, we invite you to help get the UUSS gardens and grounds ready for our community and guests. \nThe Gardens Team has scheduled work parties on Saturday April 18 and Saturday April 25\, both from 10am until noon\, and anyone is welcome to join us. \nWe’ll be raking and mulching the planting beds on the patio\, the front plaza\, and at Waters House\, as well as cleaning up the grounds behind Waters House for kids’ activities. \nYou are encouraged to bring your own gardening gloves and rakes\, and we’ll also have some available. DESCRIPTION:Meet the Moment is a framework created by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) for collective conversation\, discernment\, and strategizing about how our faith can be its most impactful in the context of new realities for Unitarian Universalism\, religious life in North America\, and the geopolitical landscape. \nWe will nourish our bodies with a potluck lunch. And\, we will nourish our relationships with deep conversations guided by three questions intended for us to learn more about ourselves and one another\, deepen our Unitarian Universalist identity\, and strategize about what collective gifts and resources we have and how we might employ them effectively and meaningfully in alignment with our faith and our UUSS mission. SUMMARY:Help Stuff Stockings on Dec. 4th
DESCRIPTION:Last December\, UUSS members and friends packed 93 Holiday Stockings for children in Schenectady. This December\, the need is so much greater. We can’t fix grocery prices or the national SNAP mess\, but we UU’s can help make Christmas and Hanukkah a little happier for local families in need. Can we collect enough small toys\, toiletries\, kids hats and mittens to fill at least 125 stockings this year??? Filling 125 stockings means collecting at least 625 items! \nThe Daytime Alliance and EBWA are co-sponsoring this 5th annual Holiday Stocking Stuffer event. The process is easy. We provide the stockings; you provide the fillers. \nOn the next two Sundays (November 23\, and 30)\, please bring small items for children ages 3 – 12 to church and drop your donated items into the boxes at the back of the Great Hall. The Sycamore Collaborative Emergency Food Pantry has especially asked us to provide toothpaste\, toothbrushes\, children’s winter hats & mittens. Small stuffed animals\, toys\, books\, stickers & art/craft supplies are needed too. \nAlso\, all are welcome to join in the fun of filling the stockings at UUSS on Thursday\, Dec. 4. Starting at 11 AM\, we will stuff the stockings\, then enjoy a catered lunch together at 12 noon\, and at 1 pm\, hear about local food needs with a presentation by Sarah McGaughnen from the Regional Food Bank. \nLunch on December 4 will be $20\, payable with cash or check at the door. DESCRIPTION:“Communication for Connection”—November 20\, 6:30-9pm\, in the church dining room\nSpeaker: Wendy Miller\, Mediator and conflict coach \nLong-time EBWA member Wendy Miller will speak to us about Non-Violent Communication\, the brainchild of Marshall B. Rosenberg. According to Wendy\, “Rosenberg was curious about what fuels conflict and how it might be addressed differently.  The approach he developed is quite simple in format and yet has been shown to be incredibly effective in resolving the most complicated conflicts interpersonally and in war-torn countries.  It requires observation without judgment\, an understanding of our own feelings and needs\, and an intention to be authentic and compassionate.” — All who identify as women are invited to come to EBWA (the Evening Branch of the Women’s Alliance) to learn how to speak so that you are heard and how to listen so that others may have that same experience. \nWe will serve coffee\, tea\, and dessert before the program.  We urge you to arrive by 6:30 pm for time to socialize before the program begins at 7 pm. Following the presentation\, there will be time for questions. The presentation starts at 1:00 pm. \nMargie Rosenkranz has been managing artistic director of The Eighth Step Coffeehouse since 1987\, working with such artists as Janis Ian\, Utah Philips\, Tom Paxton\, Ani DiFranco\, cellist Janos Starker\, Richie Havens\, and Ireland’s Bard of Peace Tommy Sands. She will speak of the Eighth Step’s evolution from a basement coffeehouse started by Albany’s FOCUS churches in 1967\, to a presenter of major folk/acoustic artists\, and its residency at Proctors from 2007 to the present. Emphasis will be on social justice work\, the Step’s relationship with the sloop Clearwater\, Jackie Alpher and Pete Seeger.  Woven throughout will be anecdotes and stories from Margie’s work\, memorable artists\, concerts and other music/arts events. \nAll are welcome but PLEASE RSVP by November 3\, by contacting Nancy Bogdanowicz. \nALSO: Mark your calendar now for our annual\, super-fun Holiday Stocking Stuffer event & lunch on Thursday\, December 4\, in the church dining room starting at 11 AM — to benefit local needy children and families served by the Sycamore Collaborative.
