Music and Choir
Cellist Jonathan Kaledin, accompanied by Gary Griffiths on piano
Ask members of the Society about their favorite things here, and a number of folks are bound to mention the music program. Music is a strength and passion here.
The church is proud to offer exceptionally high quality and varied music in its Sunday services. Here is the latest music program brochure.
Our elegant Great Hall, with its Whisperdome, boasts outstanding acoustics. Every Sunday guest musicians, Society choirs or congregation members share their talents in our services. A sampling of music includes choral music, a cellist, teenage violinist, Celtic harpist, jazz pianist, or a marimbist!
A music committee supports the music director and the music program by assisting with budget and proposal preparation, researching possible guest musicians and developing ways in which the program can continue to grow.
For almost two decades, the music program has been developed and guided by music director, Gareth Griffiths. In addition to being active as a piano accompanist and organist throughout the Capital Region, she has managed two orchestras and served as a university concert manager. Gary is also one of the founders of our Yuletide Revels.
Youth Choir Sings at Yuletide Revels – 2008
We need your musical talents! We especially welcome members who sing or play an instrument and would like to present solos in a service or participate in the music program in other ways.
There are two choirs at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady.
If you like to sing, the Society Choir is ready to welcome you. The choir sings in services several times a year, rehearsing Sunday mornings before services. This group brings together people of all ages (high school through seniors) with the common goal of making joyful music for the congregation and having great fun doing it! The Society Choir plays a major role in our Yuletide Revels.
For young people in grades three and up, this is an opportunity to learn musical skills in a friendly, relaxed environment. The Junior Choir performs in services several times a year and also participates in our Yuletide Revels. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings after services.
To join the UUSS choir, contact Gary Griffiths, Music Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 518-395-9381 or leave her a message at the church office.
Our Music Director
Gareth “Gary” Griffiths has served as our music director since 1992. She has a BA from Connecticut College and did graduate work at the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary in New York City (now the Yale Institute of Sacred Music).
Before coming to Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady (UUSS), she had been an arts administrator in the Capital Region for many years, serving as general manager of the Empire State Youth Orchestra, then the Albany Symphony, and also as concert manager at the Performing Arts Center at the University at Albany.
Gary Griffiths Conducts Yuletide Revels Choir
At UUSS in 1993, she was the founder of our medieval solstice celebration, Yuletide Revels, and ever since has served as its producer and music director. This major event in the life of the church is now presented every other year and about 100 congregation members are involved in the production.
Gary directs the entire music program at UUSS, finding guest artists, and leading both the Society Choir and the Junior Choir. She is an avid gardener and paddler and serves on the Board of the Empire State Youth Orchestra.
