The Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady’s Social Justice initiatives encourage Society members to reach out into the larger community and “serve humanity in fellowship, that all may grow in harmony with the good.”
Social Justice Activities
The Social Justice Action Team coordinates the social action activities of the congregation, disbursing donations and recommending the most effective ways to take action. UUSS members are welcome to attend monthly meetings of the council to be heard or just to observe. The following are some of the initiatives we support and they are all seeking volunteers:
Family Promise Project. UUSS works with Family Promise of the Capital Region to provide a comprehensive response to Family Homelessness. UUSS began contributing to Family Promise in October 2015 and the effort continues into 2016. We temporarily house two or three homeless families at our facilities, rotating this responsibility with several other churches until the families can be stabilized. This activity involves hosting and several other kinds of volunteer service.
Serving Meals at City Mission in Schenectady is an activity UUSS members do a few times per year. Contact anyone at the Social Action Council table in the Great Hall for more information.
Home Furnishings. On the third Saturday of every month, September through June, we volunteer at Home Furnishings, 10 N. Center St., Schenectady, from 9 am to noon. We assemble furniture and deliver furniture to families in need.
The Regional Food Bank. The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York has been helping to feed the poor and hungy in our communities since 1982. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving the hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties. Vounteers are needed to help distribute the food. Contact John Good at wjgood3 at gmail dot com for details, or look up the group Capital District Volunteers at www dot meetup dot com for more information. The next Regional Food Bank dates will be on Thursday, May 19th, 2016.
SICM The Schenectady Inner City Mission is the coordinated effort of 54 churches and synagogues to fight the effects of poverty in Schenectady County. SICM operates an emergency food distribution center, a drop-in hospitality center, a summer lunch program and several other services. More information is available at http://www.sicm.us/
At the back of the church there are 3 blue cloth bins. There we collect disposable diapers (adult and baby), feminine hygiene products, and current or future calendars, which get donated to SICM. If you have a large box of diapers, just leave them next to the bin. Other product donations: Personal care products (razors, toothbrushes and paste, etc.) can be put in the blue bins in the back to be donated to area homeless shelters or people returning to the community from prison. Please DO NOT donate empty plastic pill bottles or printer ink.
Climate Justice is another of our congregation-wide projects.
Please email Robin Schnell if you would like more information about upcoming social justice activities or events, or if you have an event you would like listed here. If you would like to talk with or make a brief presentation to the Social Justice Action Team at one of our meetings, contact Robin Schnell (chair) or any team member.
