Position Description

 

Position Title: Bookkeeper

Position Type: 10 hours/week, 12 months/year

Position Purpose:  Manages the bookkeeping and accounting functions of the church as well as occasionally assist the office staff with related tasks as assigned.

Reports to: Church Administrator

 Hours, Compensation, Benefits: 

  • This position is 10 hours/week for 12 months.
  • This position is non-exempt.
  • Salary and benefits are determined on a yearly basis according to church personnel policies.

 Duties and Accountabilities: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. However, these statements are not exhaustive and cannot anticipate all possible duties and requirements which may arise.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Receive and pay accounts payable invoices in accordance with church policy.
  • Update and maintain church accounts using QuickBooks software and generate reports as assigned.
  • Reconcile all financial accounts and prepare a financial status report to the Finance Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare and/or process payroll, and submit or oversee payroll taxes, and generation of W-2 statements for all employees.
  • Assure compliance with mandated state and federal programs including worker’s comp, health insurance, and other employment benefit programs as needed.
  • Process deposits for accounts receivable on a weekly basis.
  • Manage the stewardship database and prepare giving statements.
  • Attend staff meetings as schedule permits, and attend related church committee and other meetings from time to time as required.
  • Work in cooperation with the Finance Advisory Committee to create the annual budget
  • Assist the office staff with general clerical work (phone, filing, collating, etc.) as time permits

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 Education:

  • Associates degree in accounting and two years’ work experience

Skills:

  • Excellent bookkeeping and related accounting skills
  • Strong and effective multitasking ability
  • Strong and effective organizational skills
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks quickly and efficiently
  • Understanding of Quickbooks, spreadsheets, and related office software

 Other Requirements:

  • Ability to keep financial information about church members in strict confidence
  • The successful candidate will complete required background checks

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk; sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  Employee must be able to see.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds independently; ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds with assistance

Supervisory Relationships:

  • The bookkeeper reports directly to the Church Administrator.
