We are excited that you are interested in learning about our process for becoming a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady (UUSS).  Our desire is to have you fully understand the sources of our faith, shared principles, and rich history that brings us all together.  Here is an outline of programs we offer to help you develop a strong foundation as a Unitarian Universalist:

Step One – We encourage you attend at least one Fireside Chat.  These informal meetings are held every Sunday in the Fireplace room and are an opportunity for you to meet with a member of UUSS who can answer questions you may have about what you’ve seen or experienced so far at our worship services or other programs you may have attended.  You may attend as many of these meetings as you wish.

Step Two – If you are considering membership, we ask you to sign up for either Getting to Know UU classes, or the Wellspring program. Both of these small group programs are designed to address the basics of what it means to be an active Unitarian Universalist, and to provide an opportunity to connect and explore our historic liberal faith tradition with others.  Topics include UU history and theology, faith development, how we worship in a covenantal faith and express our values through social justice.  Sign-ups are at the Adult Faith Development Table or on line through the church website or directly in Breeze.

Step Three – Once you have completed either the Getting to Know UU classes, or Wellspring program, and you are ready to join the church, we ask that you sign up for the Membership Class.  This is a one-time Saturday morning class with others who have been on this journey toward membership.  The class covers the expectations for UU members as well as opportunities for you to express which programs or committees you feel drawn to.  The opportunity to make a commitment to membership is given at the end of class.

Step Four Formal recognition of new members is given several times a year when we as a faith community acknowledge our newest members in a brief but meaningful ceremony during a regular church service.  The date of this special service follows within a few weeks after the Membership Class.

In addition to the above steps, we also offer many other opportunities to learn about UUSS.  Our weekly news bulletin, Circuits, describes many of the other classes and volunteer opportunities to learn about the Unitarian-Universalism.   You may register to receive Circuits at the Welcome Table.
